Condominium of the Week: The Dakota Midtown condos give neighborhood feeling

By Laura Raines, for the Journal-Constitution
DATE: 09-02-2001

When Casey Keesee lived in Gwinnett County, he was constantly driving into town to meet friends for dinner, go to church or attend cultural events. Now he lives at the Dakota condominiums in Midtown and walks everywhere. The Atlanta native loves the neighborhood feeling of Midtown, where sidewalks and trees make walking pleasurable and new restaurants and shops are opening everywhere.

"Everything is within two blocks, so I have an entirely different lifestyle," said Keesee, a technology sales representative. "Everyone that sees my place wants to move in town, and a couple of friends have bought in the building."

A combination of old world charm and new world luxury, the Dakota's all brick exterior, stone steps to secluded courtyards, verandahs and stately trees blend well with the much older buildings near Piedmont Park. "Residents are attracted first by the architectural curb appeal, then by the space and amenities in the units," said sales associate Jim McMahel of the Condo Store. Luxury appointments, such as hardwood floors; double crown molding; pillars; ceramic tile in the foyer, kitchen and bath; stainless steel appliances, tray ceilings in the master; pocket doors, French doors to verandahs or balconies; and gas fireplaces give the one- and two-bedroom flats and two-level townhouses a stylish and inviting appeal. "I had looked at condos downtown for a year, and I knew that I wanted to be here as soon as I saw it. The building just sparked something in me," said Keesee.

From his balcony, he has a view of Midtown's skyline, yet the convenience of underground, gated parking that goes to the fourth level. Other amenities include a pool, cabana and fitness center on the roof. The larger two-bedroom townhouses include an eat-in kitchen as well as a formal dining room and a downstairs study.

Stephen O'Sullivan, an airline pilot who had grown tired of the commute to the airport from his west Cobb County home, moved to the Dakota last April. "I fly about 16 times a month, and now it takes me 15 minutes to get the airport, from parking lot to parking lot," he said. He can also catch MARTA because the Dakota is about five blocks from either the North Avenue or 10th Street stations.
